Spiders Misfire in Non-Conference Finale
12/28/2025 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — Despite frequently find their way to the rim, the Richmond Spiders made a season-low 34% of their shots in a 77-72 loss to Charleston Southern Sunday that dropped UR to 10-3 on the season.
The Spiders finished 7-18 (39%) from three-point range, above their season average entering the game, but were just 13-41 (32%) from inside the arc, their worst showing since Dec. 11, 2021 vs Toledo (30%).
"The style of play they defended us with we've seen before, and we prepared but we certainly had troubles with it," said Richmond coach Chris Mooney. "It really affected our rhythm and how fluid we usually try to be."
Charleston Southern, which entered the game among the nation's leaders in three-point shooting, made eight of their 10 three-pointers during the game's first 11:17, which helped the Buccaneers build a 30-20 lead midway through the first half.
"That just sparked off the whole game - them hitting threes early and giving them some confidence and they rolled with that the whole game," said Spiders forward AJ Lopez, who led UR with 22 points.
"They were very aggressive, right from the beginning and made a lot of those threes that they made in that first 10 minute segment," said Mooney. "Part of that is I feel like we were on our heels a little bit and the more aggressive they were, the more we were put on our heels."
Richmond's best stretch of the game came early in the second half, when the Spiders ran off 10 straight points to take its first lead of the game at 45-43 with 15:08 remaining. Buckets from Apostolos Roumoglou and Collin Tanner kept the Spiders narrowly in front, but Richmond went 4-16 from the field over the final 13 minutes en route to dropping its first home game this season.
Lopez's 22 points were the most by any Spider in a game this year. He went 14-14 from the foul line, tying a Robins Center record for most free throw attempts without a miss, last accomplished by Cedrick Lindsay in 2013.
Aiden Argabright was the only other Spider in double figures, with 12 points.
"None of us did enough to win the game today," said Mooney. "We can't get this one back, but we'll try to make sure that practice is really good tomorrow and we're alert and attentive and that we're ready to play and to compete in A-10 games."
Richmond will open its Atlantic 10 season Wednesday vs George Washiington at 4 PM in the Robins Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus and Monumental Sports Network.
