Spiders Power Past ODU to Reach 8-1

RICHMOND, Va. — Days after shooting their way past unbeaten Belmont on the road, the Richmond Spiders turned to their inside game for a rivalry win, posting 50 points in the paint on their way to an 86-77 win over Old Dominion Saturday in the Robins Center.
"We hit the roller a lot, and that gets you points in the paint. We had transition [baskets], which gets you points in the paint," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney. "You certainly want to be a good three-point shooting team, but you don't want to be so reliant on it because it can be taken away or it can not appear for you that day. You want to have different ways of scoring because you don't want to be easy to scout."
Richmond's 50 points in the paint equaled its most in any game since Nov. 27, 2020, when it had 52 in a season-opening win vs Morehead State. Saturday's victory moved UR to 8-1 on the season, matching its best nine-game start in Mooney's 21 seasons. The win was also Richmond's third straight in its series vs Old Dominion.
"These in-state games are really important to us and hopefully the entire state of Virginia," said Mooney.
The Spiders were led by forward Jaden Daughtry, who finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, both season highs, and center Mike Walz, who scored a season-best 16 points and also added eight boards. Richmond outrebounded the Monarchs 45-41, the eighth time UR has outrebounded its opponent in nine games this season.
Aiden Argabright added 15 points off the bench and scored Richmond's final eight points — all in the final minute — to secure the win. Argabright and Richmond's other reserves combined for 51 points, 22 more than the ODU bench.
"This is the hardest time in the history of college basketball to do well as a freshman, because there are so many older players everywhere. But he's doing really well," said Mooney of Argabright. "He just has a very good sense and knack when he has the ball to look ahead and throw the ball ahead and make a play or keep his dribble and keep himself out of trouble."
The Spiders held ODU to 38% shooting from the field (27-72), helped by seven blocks, their most since Nov. 21, 2023 vs UNLV (eight). Apostolos Roumoglou matched a career high with three blocks and also had a key steal and breakaway layup late in the second half.
"We switch an awful lot, and he's really somebody who's very effective in that kind of defense because he can guard smaller players who are quick," said Mooney of Roumoglou. "He has great length and good anticipation."
The Spiders led for more than 33 minutes, but extended its lead to double digits just once, using a 10-0 run to take a 68-58 lead with six minutes remaining.
Richmond will rest until next Saturday, when UR will host Southern Illinois at 6 PM on ESPN Plus. The Spiders are 6-0 in the Robins Center this season, matching their home win total from all of last year (6-9).
