CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Richmond Spiders women's golf team recorded its first top-five finish of the season at the RiverTowne Invitational, tying for fourth in the 14-team event with a team score of 32-over par (896). Richmond was led by junior Olivia Wilkie, who fired back-to-back rounds of 1-under 71 in Rounds 2 and 3 to finish fifth on the individual leaderboard at 2-over par (218). Wilkie entered the event with one round under par in 66 career rounds at Richmond.
"It was great to have a third step up," said Spiders coach Calle Barlow of Wilkie, who was the third player in the Richmond lineup. "Her time has been coming. She's getting more comfortable going low and she will continue to gain more confidence as she does it more. I'm excited to see her perform the rest of this championship season. I think she's just scratching the surface."
With Wilkie leading the way, the Spiders combined to shoot 11-over par over the final 36 holes at RiverTowne Country Club, four shots better than any other team. Richmond finished tied with Cincinnati at 32-over par, trailing only Elon (+30), Marshall (+28), and High Point (+26). Entering the event, Richmond's best finish this season had been a sixth-place result at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational in October.
Wilkie's fifth-place finish was the second top-five finish of her career and her first since placing third at the 2022 Patriot League Championship. Her 2-over par score for the event matched the lowest of her career (2022 Patriot League Championship) and equaled the 16th best individual tournament score in program history.
"I found my ball striking! It was my third year playing the course, so I felt pretty comfortable out there. Once I locked in my tempo, I was able to find big spaces," said Wilkie.
Sophomore Maya Beasley also finished in the top 15, tying for 13th place at 7-over par (223). It was Beasley's fourth top-15 finish in her last four events.
Junior Hannah Lydic tied for 20th at 10-over par (226), the 13th top-20 result of her career and her second this season.
Senior Christine Mandile tied the lowest round of her career with a 1-over 73 in the final round Tuesday. She finished the event tied for 41st at 18-over par (234).
Freshman Caroline Thompson placed 66th at 31-over par (247).
Playing as an individual, sophomore Heather Appelson shot three-straight rounds of 80 (+8) to finish in 58th place at 24-over par.
Richmond will return to action at the Chris Banister Golf Classic on March 9-11 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Silver Lakes in Gadsden, Ala.
