Spiders Open Season with Record-Low Scores at Nittany Lion Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Richmond recorded one of the 10 best team scores in program history Tuesday, shooting a 1-over-par 289 in the final round of the Nittany Lion Invitational to finish the event at 14-over par (878).
The Spiders' final-round score tied for the seventh-lowest 18-hole team score in program history and was Richmond's lowest since its program-record 283 in the final round of the 2024 RiverTowne Invitational. UR's three-round total matched the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in program history, equaling the 878 the Spiders recorded while winning the 2025 Tribe Invitational.
"I saw so much good this week," said Spiders coach Calle Barlow. "I also saw a lot of grit and fight and a lot of calm confidence. This team is resilient and will continue to grow and be successful!"
Richmond moved up one spot Tuesday to finish 11th in the 18-team field in its first event of the 2026-27 season. Virginia Tech won the team title at 20-under par, five shots ahead of Maryland.
Freshman Carter Bransford led Richmond in her collegiate debut, tying for 15th at 1-under par (215). Bransford followed Monday's rounds of 72 and 69 with a 2-over 74 Tuesday. Her 215 (-1) tied for the seventh-lowest 54-hole individual score in program history.
Senior Maya Beasley shot a team-best 2-under 70 in the final round to finish tied for 23rd at even par (216). Beasley's 41 pars during the event were tied for third most in the field, and her five bogeys were tied for fourth fewest among the 90 competitors.
Freshman Stella Moritz registered the first under-par round of her collegiate career, carding a 1-under 71 to move into a tie for 45th at 6-over par (222).
"I'm so proud of Carter and Stella on completing their first collegiate event," added Barlow.
Junior Katie Magner matched Bransford with a 2-over 74 Tuesday and tied for 52nd at 9-over par (225). Sophomore Addie Doroh finished tied for 70th at 16-over par (232) following a final-round 76.
On Penn State's White Course, junior Caroline Thompson and senior Heather Appelson completed play in the 36-hole Happy Valley Individual. Thompson finished 23rd at 10-over par (154), while Appelson tied for 32nd at 16-over par (160).
Richmond will return to action Sept. 21-22 at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational at the University Club of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.
