Spiders Drop Road Matchup With Davidson
02/08/2025 | Men's Basketball
DAVIDSON, N.C. — After torching the nets for 20 minutes at Belk Arena Saturday, the Spiders' shooting cooled all the way off in the second half, contributing in large part to UR's 71-60 loss to Davidson. Richmond went 7-12 from three-point range in the first half but just 1-11 after halftime.
"I thought we had actually really good looks, but they didn't go in," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney.
While the Spiders led for most of the first three-quarters of the game, Davidson never trailed by more than seven, allowing them to take advantage when the Spiders offense stalled in the final 10 minutes.
A driving layup by Davidson center Reed Bailey with 8:57 remaining put the Wildcats ahead for good at 52-51. Bailey, who scored a career-best 32 points when the teams met at the Robins Center on January 25, registered game highs in points (24), rebounds (8), assists (5), and blocks (2) Saturday while drawing 10 fouls on UR defenders.
"He's so fast for a guy his size. He puts you in difficult situations," said Mooney of Bailey. "He doesn't catch the ball on the block quite as much as he catches it around the elbow or foul line area where his speed can show up a little bit more. We really just harped on trying to make him score over us."
Davidson outscored Richmond 21-9 over the final nine minutes, as the Spiders shot 4-14 from the field and 1-4 from the foul line, including a pair of misses on the front ends of 1-and-1 opportunities, during that span.
"We get an open shot that we don't make. We miss a few free throws down the stretch. Some of our same offensive issues showed up, which didn't really in the first half," said Mooney.
Mikkel Tyne tallied each of Richmond's final three field goals and finished with a team-high 13 points, matching his most in an A-10 game this season.
"Mikkel really got us some baskets in the lane in the second half. I thought that was really positive," said Mooney. "One thing we said after the first game was we needed our speed to show up a little bit and I thought [Mikkel] for sure did."
"I was trying to use my speed against them and kind of pull up in that mid-range, floater area," said Tyne. "At the rim, I have no advantage so the pull-up is way better. I work on that a lot."
Dusan Neskovic added 12 points, the only other Spider to reach double figures. Mike Walz and Jason Roche each finished with nine points, while B. Artis White recorded five of Richmond's nine assists, his most in any game this season.
UR finished the game making 46 percent of its shots from the field, but that included 13-24 (54 percent) in the first half and just 11-28 (39 percent) in the second half.
"We don't have quite as much of that inside presence to go in there and just score the ball when all else is not working," said Mooney. "That's certainly a challenge for us."
The loss was Richmond's first in its last five games at Belk Arena, Davidson's home court since 1989. The Spiders fell to 8-16 overall this season and 3-8 in Atlantic 10 play.
Richmond will play a pair of home games next week, facing Loyola Chicago Tuesday at 7 PM and Fordham Saturday at 6 PM. Both games will air on ESPN Plus and the Monumental Sports Network.
