RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team was honored with the Moment of the Year award at the 2025 RVA Sports Awards on Saturday, recognizing the Spiders' historic 2024 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship victory.
Richmond, who claimed the tournament's No. 1 seed last year, claimed its first-ever A-10 title on March 10, 2024, with a dominant 65-51 win over then No. 6-seeded Rhode Island. The championship marked the program's first conference title since winning the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship in 1991.
"Our program is incredibly honored to receive this award," Head Coach Aaron Roussell said. "Winning the A-10 championship last March was a lifelong memory and a special moment for our program. Doing it in Henrico, with so much support from our fans, made it even more meaningful. We're looking forward to the opportunity to do it again and hope to see everyone at the Henrico Sports & Event Center March 5-9. We truly appreciate this recognition and the support from the Richmond Region Tourism, CBS6 and the RVA Sports Awards committee."
The Spiders, who won the title in front of 3,089 fans at the Henrico Sports & Events Center, controlled the championship game from start to finish, opening with a 14-7 first-quarter lead and extending the advantage to 35-19 by halftime. Behind standout performances from Addie Budnik, Siobhan Ryan and Grace Townsend, Richmond built a 25-point lead in the second half and held off a late push by Rhode Island to secure the title.
Budnik, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, finished the game with 14 points, while Townsend (13), Ryan (14) and Maggie Doogan (18) also scored in double figures. Richmond shot 51% from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line in the championship-clinching performance.
The Moment of the Year award recognizes the most electrifying and inspiring achievements in Richmond sports over the past year. The Spiders will look to repeat their title run again on March 5-9 as the A-10 Championship returns to the Henrico Sports & Events Center for its second-straight year.
