RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team has the honor of highlighting freshman Sofia Barbulescu as this week's Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. This is Barbulescu and the Spiders' second weekly honor of the season, as the rookie picked up the recognition Jan. 28.
Barbulescu, a Snagov, Romania, native, was vital in a 2-0 week for the Spiders, leading the team to two straight wins over Campbell (W, 6-1) and East Carolina (W, 4-2). Against Campbell, Barbulescu teamed up with fellow Spider Elizabeth Novak and defeated Jessica Maras and Veronika Prospalova (CU), 6-2 on court two, helping the Spiders clinch the doubles point. In singles, she took care of business on the ace court, defeating Sonia Pieczynska (CU) in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
Against East Carolina, Barbulescu and Novak again picked up a win on doubles court two, 6-3, over Lilly Lancaster and Isabel Rivera Ortiz (ECU). In singles, she earned a straight-set victory over Ines Bachir (ECU), 6-4, 6-0, solidifying an undefeated week in both singles and doubles.
Barbulescu and the Spiders head west over spring break, as Richmond takes on Northern Arizona on March 11 at 1 p.m. ET in Flagstaff, Ariz. before a matchup at UNLV in Las Vegas on March 13, also slated for 1 p.m. ET.
