RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team has the honor of highlighting junior Lara Bakhaya as this week's Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week. The honor is Bakhaya's third career weekly award, as she picked up two Rookie of the Week honors in 2023. It also marks Richmond's third weekly recognition this season, with Sofia Barbulescu earning Rookie of the Week twice.
Bakhaya, a London, England, native, is coming off a stellar week, helping the Spiders secure three straight home wins over George Mason (4-0), Duquesne (6-1) and Georgetown (W, 4-3).
Against Mason, she and Lainey O'Neil defeated Young and Siegel (Mason) 6-4 on doubles court two, helping Richmond clinch the doubles point. In singles, the junior dominated Liu (Mason) on the top court, 6-2, 6-0, contributing to UR's 4-0 sweep.
She carried that momentum into the match against Duquesne, cruising past Roka (DUQ) 6-0, 6-1 in singles to fuel Richmond's 6-1 conference victory.'
Against Georgetown, Bakhaya and Andrea Campodonico clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Kennedy and Garofolo-Ro (Georgetown) on the top court. She then made quick work of Garofolo-Ro in singles, winning 6-0, 6-1 on court three to help UR earn its first win over the Hoyas since 2019. Bakhaya finished the week 3-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles, with one match left unfinished.
The Spiders are back in action April 5, traveling to William & Mary for a 1 p.m. matchup before returning home for contests against Delaware on April 6 at 11 a.m. and A-10 rival VCU on April 10 at 2 p.m. at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.
