Richmond, William & Mary Agree to Extend Football Rivalry
04/16/2025 | Football
Richmond, Va. — "The Oldest Rivalry in the South" is set to continue its storied tradition. Both Richmond and William & Mary have come together to ensure their football series, the Capital Cup Presented by C&F Bank, remains a part of the rich athletic tradition at both schools and have announced dates for the next six meetings of the celebrated matchup.
The Capital Cup is one of the most eagerly awaited contests on both team's schedules year after year, and beginning in 2025 it will be a non-conference matchup as Richmond begins its affiliation with the Patriot League.
"Knowing that we're going to face William & Mary each year gives us a great start on constructing a challenging non-conference schedule," said Spider football head coach Russ Huesman. "Our players, our staff, and our fans look forward to facing the Tribe every fall, and each game against William & Mary will continue to be a high-stakes, high-intensity matchup."
The future Capital Cup dates are as follows:
· November 22, 2025 – at William & Mary
· October 3, 2026 – at Richmond
· September 18, 2027 – at William & Mary
· September 16, 2028 – at Richmond
· September 8, 2029 – at William & Mary
· September 7, 2030 – at Richmond
"We are proud to extend one of college football's greatest rivalries through 2030, said Vice President & Director of Athletics, John P. Hardt. "All Spider fans look forward to our annual gridiron showdown with William & Mary, and this year's team is excited to be visiting Zable Stadium in November. Regardless of conference affiliations, I can't imagine a Richmond football season without having a chance to face the Tribe, and I hope I never have to. Thank you to William & Mary for working with us to ensure that this storied football rivalry will continue for years to come."
The 2025 contest between the Spiders and Tribe will be the 136th meeting between the teams. Only three rivalries in NCAA Division I have more games played: Lafayette–Lehigh (160), Princeton– Yale (147), and Harvard–Yale (140). Richmond holds a two-game lead in the historic rivalry that currently sits at 66-64-5 after the Spiders beat the Tribe 27-0 last season to finish its final CAA season with an unbeaten league record.
