ORLANDO, Fla. — After entering the day 13 shots out of the lead, the Spider women's golf team is only five back after shooting the low round Friday in Round 2 of the Atlantic 10 Women's Golf Championship at Evermore Resort. Richmond will enter the final round at 45-over par (621), within shouting distance of 36-hole leader Loyola Chicago (40-over 616), after combining for a team score of 16-over par Friday, six shots better than any other team in the field.
"We've done exactly what we needed to do," said Spiders coach Calle Barlow. "I thought we thought ourselves around the golf course much better. We stayed really patient and looked really good — calm and composed."
UR was led by junior Hannah Lydic, who shot the day's low round with a 1-under 71, climbing all the way into a tie for second on the individual leaderboard at 8-over par (152). It was Lydic's second round under par this season and her first this spring.
"My round today was more patient. I was able to trust myself and my line," said Lydic. "Coach [Barlow] and I worked really hard on the range afterwards yesterday and on the range this morning to just dial in my aim and what the line really looks like when I'm over the ball and that really helped me a ton today."
Lydic recorded four of Richmond's six birdies Friday, making a 2 on the island green par-3 third hole, making a 3 on the par-4 fifth hole, and birdieing both par-5s on the back 9 (13 and 15).
She's one shot in front of fellow junior Olivia Wilkie, who's in fifth place at 9-over par (153) after 78 (+6) Friday. Playing in the final grouping, Wilkie drained a 20-foot putt for bogey on her final stroke of the day after finding the water right of the 18th fairway with her second shot from a fairway bunker.
Sophomore Maya Beasley is tied for seventh place at 11-over par (155). She shot a 4-over 76 Friday, closing her round with seven straight pars.
Freshman Caroline Thompson is tied for 14th (18-over 162) and freshman Katie Magner is tied for 16th (19-over 163). Magner and Beasley lead the field in total pars through two rounds, with 25.
Richmond's 16-over 304 Friday was followed by Dayton's 22-over 310. The Flyers are in third place at 47-over par (623) entering the final round, which will begin for the final three teams at 8:15 AM Saturday.
"We're in great position," said Barlow of her team's status with 18 holes remaining.
