University of Richmond Athletics

Richmond Athletics Enters a New Era
07/01/2025 | General, Spider Athletic Fund
Greetings Spiders!
The terms of the House v. NCAA settlement take effect today, providing Richmond and the rest of Division I some much-needed answers regarding the changing landscape of college sports. For many months, the University has been preparing for the potential outcome of the House litigation, which includes a $2.8B settlement for back damages and provisions for direct payments from schools to student-athletes going forward. While this new financial framework for intercollegiate athletics presents challenges, it also provides the University with an opportunity to affirm our commitment to competitive excellence.
In February, Richmond announced its decision to opt-in to the terms of the House v. NCAA settlement and begin providing direct payments to men's and women's basketball student-athletes. This decision has enabled Spider basketball to attract and retain top student-athletes, which is essential to our ability to continue to compete and win at the highest levels of the sport.
For decades, the success of Spider basketball has been a point of pride for our community, uniting generations of Spiders. While the rules governing collegiate athletics have changed, the University's commitment to athletic and academic excellence remains a hallmark of our school.
The continued success of Richmond Athletics in this new era and our commitment to providing unparalleled experiences for our student-athletes require innovative solutions to help offset the costs of the House settlement. We're working to develop new opportunities to engage with Richmond Athletics, including original experiences that will allow fans to interact with the Spiders like never before. And we're appealing to the loyalty and generosity of our greater Spider family, which has propelled Richmond Athletics through periods of transition time and time again.
