Richmond Football Opens 2025 Camp with Eyes on Patriot League Success and Playoff Milestone
07/31/2025 | Football
Richmond, Va. – Russ Huesman's Richmond Spiders report to campus Thursday, with preseason training camp opening Friday morning. This year's team is aiming for its third straight conference title and a fourth consecutive playoff appearance. The Spiders have never made the playoffs in four consecutive seasons — a milestone they'll look to achieve in 2025.
All practices will take place at Robins Stadium. Players will alternate between wearing helmets, shells (helmets and shoulder pads), and full pads over the course of the 19-session camp. All camp dates are open to the public and are subject to change. Fans may watch practice from the west side of the stadium (College Rd. side).
The 2025 Spiders football team is made up of 90 players from 17 states, Washington, D.C., Canada, and Australia. This year's roster consists of 26 freshmen, 21 sophomores, 18 juniors, 14 seniors, eight fifth-year seniors, and three graduate students.
Huesman, the third-winningest coach in University of Richmond football history, enters his ninth season as head coach in 2025 and 17th overall as a collegiate head coach. Since returning to Richmond in 2017, he has led the Spiders to sustained success, including a 32-10 overall record and a 26-3 conference mark over the past four seasons. During that span, Richmond captured two conference championships, made three consecutive FCS Playoff appearances, and ranked among the top programs nationally in total wins. In 2024, the Spiders completed an undefeated conference season—their first since 1968—and finished the regular season with 10 wins, the program's best since 2009.
Huesman added three coaches to his staff ahead of the 2025 season, including co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Mike Cummings from App State, wide receivers coach Jerry Taylor who most recently coached at Columbia and offensive quality control assistant (offensive line) Eric Gobble. The 2025 season also sees the elevation of quarterbacks coach Jacob Huesman to co-offensive coordinator alongside Cummings.
The Spiders dipped into the transfer portal over the offseason, landing defensive back Tayshaun Burney (Wake Forest), offensive linemen JT Sowell (App State) and Jason Smith (North Carolina), tight end Aiden Steinfeldt (Marshall), and wide receivers Jaiden Fair (Maryland) and Joey Duggan (Fordham).
The Spiders enter their first season in the Patriot League in 2025, welcoming five new conference opponents to Robins Stadium: Holy Cross (Homecoming, Oct. 18), Fordham (Fall Festival game, Nov. 1), and Lafayette (Senior Day/Hero Appreciation game, Nov. 15). All home games will kick off at 2:00 p.m., offering students, alumni, and the Richmond community a full day of Spiders football and family-friendly experiences. The Spiders also host in-state foe VMI for the home opener Sept. 20 and Howard during Family Weekend a week later on Sept. 27.
Five Spiders earned Preseason All-Patriot League honors, and the team was picked to finish second in the eight-team conference, which will expand to 10 teams in 2026 with the additions of former CAA opponents William & Mary and Villanova, who followed Richmond's move to the Patriot League.
Captains and offensive linemen Gabriel Carbajal and Scott Hummel were named All-Patriot League alongside tight end Sean Clarke. On defense, linebacker and captain Carter Glassmyer and defensive end Camden Byrd also received All-League recognition. Glasmsyer was also named a Preseason All-American by both FCS Football Central and Stats Perform.
