Miss at Buzzer Seals Spiders Loss to Saint Joseph's
01/11/2026 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. —Mikkel Tyne's game-winning three-point attempt from the left wing, a shot that would have given the Spiders their first lead of the game and capped off the biggest Richmond comeback in years, glanced off the back of the rim as the buzzer sounded at the Robins Center Sunday, sealing UR's 67-65 loss to Saint Joseph's. The defeat dropped Richmond to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic 10 this season.
The drama of the final seconds was made possibly only by a furious Richmond comeback attempt that lasted most of the second half after the Spiders found themselves in a 17-point hole with 19 minutes left in regulation, trailing 50-33. Seconds before Tyne's attempt, a three-pointer from the top of the key by Mike Walz — his second in the final minute of the game — cut Saint Joseph's lead to 66-65.
After Saint Joseph's Anthony Finkley missed the back end of a one-and-one opportunity from the foul line with seven seconds left, Walz grabbed the rebound and flipped it to Spiders guard Will Johnston, who sprinted upcourt. On the offensive end, Walz screened for Johnston and received a return pass at the top of the key before firing it to Tyne on the left wing for the potential game-winner, which missed by inches.
We have a little play there at the end where we try to get a ball screen in the middle of the court, and we have the option to roll or pop, and we popped, said Spiders coach Chris Mooney. I thought Will Johnston made a good play and good read. As the hedge came on, he threw it back to Mike for what I thought would be the attempt.
Richmond has now lost three straight games at the Robins Center after winning its first eight home games of the season.
Saint Joseph's gained control from the opening tip, scoring the game's first seven points and building a 45-33 halftime lead over the game's first 20 minutes.
We started off the game poorly at both ends, some uncharacteristically sloppy turnovers, I think our movement wasn't great, said Mooney. I thought they really dictated the game in the first half with aggression. They made shots. I thought we were on our heels and didn't really give a good account of ourselves in the first half.
SJU stretched its lead to 17 with five quick points to start the second half, taking a 50-33 lead with 18:59 on the clock. Richmond would outscore the Hawks 24-8 over the next 15 minutes to cut its deficit to 58-57 on a three-pointer by Spiders guard David Thomas with 4:32 to play.
The three-point line was Richmond's only friend on offense for much of the game, as UR hit 10 of its 25 three-point attempts (40%) but shot just 12-39 from inside the arc, its worst two-point field goal percentage (31%) in a game since Dec. 11, 2021 vs Toledo (30%).
They had a good game plan. They were just sagging down in the paint, said guard Aiden Argabright, who led Richmond with 15 points.
We just weren't clicking, said Mooney. I guess that has happened in the last two [home] games to varying degrees. We were on our heels, and we'll work to figure that out. Whether it's different guys playing or starting or a different substitution pattern, we'll work to figure that out.
Thomas was the only other Spider in double figures, with 10 points. Walz collected a team-high eight rebounds, while Argabright added five assists, half of the 10 registered by Richmond over the course of the game.
Richmond will return to action Wednesday vs La Salle at the Robins Center. Tip time is 7 PM and the game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus and Monumental Sports Network.
