GW Separates from Spiders Early Saturday in DC

WASHINGTON, D.C. — George Washington secured a regular-season sweep of the Spiders on the strength of a 15-3 run over the game's first four minutes Saturday at the Smith Center. GW's sizzling opening stretch set the stage for a first half which saw the Revolutionaries outscore the Spiders 52-32 while shooting 56% from the field and 53% from three-point range (10-19).
"I thought that they were very comfortable and have good size, good talent, and [they] were just a little bit too comfortable even though we were trying some different things, whether it be on ball screens or our half-court defense, we just weren't able to make them uncomfortable enough," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney of the opening 20 minutes. "When you're on the road, and you're playing a team this talented, this invested, you have to be ready."
The loss dropped Richmond to 13-8 on the season and 3-5 in the Atlantic 10.
GW, which hit 17 three-pointers in a 99-85 win in the Robins Center on December 31, hit five of its first six three-point shots Saturday.
"Sometimes it's hard to have a game plan for that. All you can make them do is take tough threes, and when the team is making tough threes, that's really hard to defend against," said Spiders center Mike Walz.
The Revolutionaries didn't cool off from three-point range until the final 15 minutes, going 2-10 from deep over that span to allow Richmond to narrow the final margin to 85-69.
"Obviously, not the result any of us were hoping for," said Walz, who was questionable with an ankle injury entering the game but ultimately played 24 minutes, finishing with nine points and 14 rebounds, the most by a Spider this season.
"When he went back in the game, I thought he was terrific," said Mooney of Walz. "He's a very good defensive rebounder, and that's not easy to do when [GW center Rafael] Castro's the guy that you're responsible for, but he rebounded the ball defensively well. He did keep us moving once we got into a better rhythm in the second half. I thought he played a really good last three-quarters of the game."
The Spiders looked better over the final 20 minutes, outscoring GW 37-33 in that span behind guard AJ Lopez, who scored all his team-high 15 points after halftime.
Freshman Aiden Argabright, who made his first start of the season, scored nine of his 14 points in the second half. He also added a pair of assists with no turnovers in 33 minutes.
"He has command of what we're trying to do and what he wants to do and has a really good sense of what's going on out there and is really, really so extremely helpful to us," said Mooney of Argabright.
Will Johnston was the third and final Spider in double figures, finishing with 11 points and shooting 3-6 from three-point range.
Richmond has now dropped three straight games to George Washington following three straight wins vs the Revs.
Up next for the Spiders is a matchup with crosstown rival VCU in the Richmond Area Honda Dealers Capital City Classic. The game will tip Tuesday at 7 PM at VCU's Siegel Center and be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.
"I think we just need to understand the urgency," said Walz. "That's always a game that people have circled on their calendars. There needs to be an elevated level of physicality and attention to detail."
