RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team fell in the 2026 Betterment Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Tournament Finals to Saint Joseph's 2-1 after 45 minutes of game action tied at 1-1. Saint Joseph's made four successful attempts to defeat Richmond's three.
Richmond scored first eight minutes into the game when Maia Dechiario scored on the Spiders first penalty corner of the game. Clara Larripa, serving as the inserter, sent the ball to stick stopper Camila Daud to set up the push for Dechiario's sixth goal of the season.
Saint Joseph's got the equalizer in the 20th minute, putting in a rebound off a save by Mairead Carey on SJU's initial penalty corner attempt. Carey made a career-high seven saves in regulation.
After 75 minutes of scoreless and defensive battle the teams went to a shootout. UR had the upper hand in corners, including four in the overtime period, 10-7, while SJU tallied an 17-9 advantage in shots.
In a dramatic shootout, Saint Joseph's took an early 2-0 lead as Alison Buffington and Lily DeWan scored. The Hawks missed their next three, however, and Richmond's Clara Larripa and Maura Seeger converted to make it 2-2 after five rounds.
The teams went into single-round shootout format, and after Buffington and Larripa missed on their tries DeWan put SJU in front. Her effort was matched by the Spiders' Valen Luna Paratore, leaving it at 3-3 through seven rounds. Erika Culp converted in the top half of the eighth round for the Hawks, and then SJU goalie Avianna Wagner stuffed Seeger to clinch the title for the Hawks.
Richmond was represented by Maura Seeger, Larripa, Dechiario and Carey on the 2026 Betterment Atlantic 10 All-Tournament team, as voted on by the media and school athletic communications professionals.
Richmond closes out the season with a 12-7 record, including a 5-1 record to earn a two-seed in the A10 Tournament.
