O’Neil Delivers Clinch in Home Win Over East Carolina

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over East Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Westhampton Tennis Complex. With the win, the Spiders improve to 5-9 on the spring season while the Pirates fall to 3-6. In addition, Richmond has now won four-straight matches over East Carolina.
How It Happened
East Carolina claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Kim Auerswald and Reese Calvo defeated Sofia Barbulescu and Abby Lee 6-4 on court one, followed by a 7-5 decision from Xenia Jeromin and Lilly Lancaster over Lainey O'Neil and Lucy Webber on court two. The third doubles match featuring Beatriz Guerra and Elizabeth Novak was left unfinished with Richmond leading 5-4.
Richmond responded in singles play, starting with a dominant performance from Lucy Webber on court four. Webber rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Reese Calvo to even the match at 1-1 and improve to 9-5 in dual singles this spring. Moments later, Beatriz Guerra gave the Spiders their first lead of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Joan Madi on court six, marking her fourth singles win of the season.
Abby Lee extended Richmond's advantage on court three, defeating Xenia Jeromin 6-4, 6-2 to push the score to 3-1. East Carolina answered with back-to-back victories on courts two and one to even the match at 3-3. Ivona Savekova outlasted Elizabeth Novak 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 on court two before Kim Auerswald rallied past Sofia Barbulescu 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 on the top court.
With the match on the line, Lainey O'Neil delivered the clincher on court five, battling back after dropping the opening set to secure a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Veronica Pavlenko to seal the 4-3 win for the Spiders. The win marked O'Neil's fifth singles victory of the spring.
