Duquesne Stuns Spiders at Buzzer
03/07/2026 | Men's Basketball
PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Duquesne's first lead of the game came as the final horn sounded, when forward David Dixon redirected a missed three-pointer through the hoop, completing an improbable comeback and giving the Dukes a 79-77 win Saturday.
Fittingly, the game-winning points came on an offensive putback, as Duquesne relied on its offensive rebounding and defensive pressure in the second half to erase what had been a 30-point deficit with a little more than 25 minutes to play.
"No matter what has happened in the first half, it's always going to be difficult and a challenge and the other team is going to be talented and good and ready to play," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney.
Richmond was outrebounded 15-3 on the offensive glass, leading to a 17-2 Dukes advantage in second-chance points, and committed 16 turnovers, its most in an A-10 game this season, including three in a critical 60-second stretch late in the second half.
"We've been great at taking care of the ball," said Mooney. "The game got very physical, especially when we had the ball, and you need to be able to handle that kind of pressure and there's a difference in intensity. We didn't do a good enough job with that, of course."
After cutting Richmond's lead to 49-28 at intermission, the Dukes continued to chip away throughout the second half, trimming their deficit to single digits at 72-64 on a driving layup by Maximus Edwards with 4:13 remaining. But it seemed like the Spiders were primed to hold on when Mikkel Tyne knocked down a three-pointer, his fourth of the game, at the 3:11 mark, to put Richmond ahead 77-66.
That would be the final points for UR, as Duquesne ended the game on a 13-0 run. On Richmond's remaining five possessions, the Spiders missed a pair of field goal attempts and committed three turnovers.
The loss dropped Richmond to 15-16 overall and 5-13 in Atlantic 10 play this season. It also ended UR's four-game winning streak vs Duquesne.
AJ Lopez led UR with 15 points, his 13th Atlantic 10 game with 15 or more points this season (second most in the conference). Tyne and Will Johnston each added 14, and Aiden Argabright was the final Spider to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points.
Collin Tanner collected a team-high five of Richmond's 22 rebounds, its fewest in a game this season. Jaylen Robinson led all Spiders with five assists, a career high, and Mike Walz contributed three blocks, equaling a career best.
UR shot 63.8% (30-47) from the field, its best in a game since Jan. 18, 2020 at George Mason (67.3%).
The Spiders will be the 11 seed at next week's Atlantic 10 Championship in Pittsburgh and will open play against 14 seed Loyola Chicago Wednesday at PPG Paints Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 PM on USA Network.
