RICHMOND, Va. — Maurice Joseph, who helped guide Spider men's basketball to an Atlantic 10 championship in 2022, has returned to the program in an assistant coach rule, head coach Chris Mooney announced Friday. Joseph, who spent the last four seasons as an assistant at Butler, was also an assistant coach at Richmond for the 2021-22 season, when the Spiders won the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the second time in program history and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
"I couldn't be more thrilled to be back at Richmond! I am grateful to Coach Mooney for this opportunity and I am looking forward to competing for A-10 championships, like we accomplished during my first stint with the program," said Joseph.
"Maurice has deep ties to Richmond and the entire Atlantic 10, and I know our program will once again benefit from his experience, his knowledge, and his passion for college basketball. I'm excited to have him back at Richmond and looking forward to having him on our sideline this season," said Mooney.
Joseph has more than 15 years of college coaching experience, including three seasons as the head coach at George Washington from 2016 to 2019. That three-year run capped a stretch of eight seasons on the GW staff for Joseph. He rose from assistant director of operations in 2011 to assistant coach in 2013 and finally to head coach in 2016. In 2016-17, he led the Colonials to a 20-15 record and berth in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) despite being the youngest head coach in a top 10 RPI conference, at 31. Following three seasons as the head coach at George Washington, he spent the 2019-20 season as an assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson.
In 2020-21, Joseph served as an assistant coach at George Mason and helped the Patriots to a 13-9 record and an 8-6 finish in the Atlantic 10 while assisting with the development of Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Tyler Kolek.
Joseph's lone season at UR was one of the most successful in program history, as the Spiders finished 24-13 and won their second Atlantic 10 Tournament before defeating Big Ten champion Iowa in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
In four seasons as an assistant coach at Butler, Joseph served as the team's defensive coordinator in addition to focusing on player development, recruiting, and scouting. Joseph helped Butler to a pair of postseason berths and two in-season tournament titles, the 2024 Arizona Tip-Off and the 2025 Greenbrier Tip-Off.
As a player, Joseph led Vermont to a 49-19 record over his final two collegiate seasons, including an America East championship and appearance in the NCAA Tournament as a senior in 2010. Joseph averaged a career-best 13.9 points per game that season, second on the team. He began his college career at Michigan State, where he was part of a pair of NCAA Tournament teams while appearing in 52 total games as a freshman and sophomore.
A native of Montreal, Quebec, Joseph prepped at Champlain-St. Lambert and was named Canada's National Player of the Year in 2005. Joseph and his wife Kristen have a son, Kameron.
