Hughes' Counterstrike Earns Spiders Tie vs Duquesne

RICHMOND, Va. — Kingsley Hughes scored her third goal of the season and Veronica Rrapi stopped a first-half penalty kick as Richmond battled Duquesne to a 1-1 draw Thursday at President's Field at River Road, extending the Spiders' unbeaten streak to 10 games this season and 13 games dating back to last season, both program records.
Richmond moved to 5-0-5 overall and 0-0-2 in Atlantic 10 play. Dating back to last season, UR is 6-0-7 over its program-record 13-game unbeaten streak.
Duquesne generated the better chances in the opening half, outshooting Richmond 6-2 and putting four shots on goal. Rrapi kept the Dukes off the scoreboard, making saves in the 11th and 19th minutes before denying Jayden Sharpless on a penalty kick in the 26th minute. Rrapi added another save in the 33rd minute to send the teams into halftime scoreless.
Richmond found more attacking opportunities after the break. Emma Newman forced a save in the 54th minute before Hughes broke the scoreless tie in the 58th minute mark. Buried deep in the corner, Paige West found space to clear the ball to Morgane Zinn, who beat a pair of Dukes defenders and raced down the left side of the field. Her poke ahead with her right foot found a streaking Hughes in the middle of the field. Hughes sent her second touch past the diving Duquesne keeper and into the back of the net for her second goal in Richmond's last two home games. Zinn's assist was her team-leading fourth of the year.
The Spiders held the advantage for more than 24 minutes before Duquesne pulled even in the 82nd minute. Paige Kuisis's deflection from in front of the goal bounced off the post and right to teammate Claire Beasley, who scored from point-blank range to tie the match at 1-1 with 8:48 remaining.
Rrapi finished with four saves in a scoreless opening half before Isabel Seifert took over in goal after halftime. Seifert made a save on Bundy in the 50th minute and allowed one goal over the final 45 minutes. Richmond's goalkeepers have surrendered just five goals through 10 games this season.
Duquesne finished with a 9-5 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal, and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. After being outshot 6-2 in the opening half, Richmond and Duquesne each attempted three shots after halftime.
Richmond will remain home Sunday, hosting St. Bonaventure at 2 p.m. at President's Field at River Road.
