| Broadcast Teams A voice synonymous with University of Richmond Athletics, Bob Black has called Spider athletic events since the 1983-84 basketball season, when Richmond made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. The 2023-24 season will be his 40th consecutive football campaign and his 41st straight basketball season. Black has been behind the microphone for every NCAA men's basketball tournament game that Richmond has played, called the football team's run to the 2008 National Championship and the baseball team's appearance in the NCAA Super Regional in 2002. Black hosts weekly radio shows with head men's basketball coach Chris Mooney and head football coach Russ Huesman on ESPN 106.1. He also hosts a general sports talk show, "The Sports Huddle" from 4-6 pm Monday through Friday, on ESPN 106.1. A Syracuse University grad, Black covered the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY, where he witnessed and reported on the historic U.S. ice hockey victory over the Soviet Union that led to a gold medal for the United States. Considered one of the premier broadcasters in the state of Virginia, Black was honored with the 1997, 2000, 2008 and 2010 Virginia Sportscaster of the Year Award. |
| Former Spider captain and All-Conference standout Chris Anderson '00 returned to the Richmond football program as broadcast analyst on the Spider Sports Properties Radio Network in 2015, and moves into his ninth year in the booth in 2023. Anderson, who played defensive back for the Spiders from 1995-1999, was a four-year starter who earned three All-Conference selections and played on the Spiders' 1998 Atlantic 10 Championship team that reeled off nine consecutive victories, the second longest winning streak in school history. After graduating from Richmond, Anderson moved from the playing field to the coaching sidelines, joining the staff of former Spider standout Scott Burton at Highland Springs High School in Richmond. Anderson coached with the Springers from 2000-2005, mentoring more than 25 future college student-athletes. When at home, Black and Anderson will occupy the Ray Tate Radio Booth at Robins Stadium. Joining Black and Anderson on all Spider football broadcasts is sideline reporter Matt Smith '92, who celebrates his 21st full season in 2023 of providing a field-level analysis of the game and postgame interviews from the Spider locker room. Smith also handles play-by-play and analysis duties for selected Spider men's and women's basketball broadcasts.  |
On men's basketball broadcasts, former Spider guard Greg Beckwith '86, joins Black to provide analysis. A member of the Richmond Athletics Hall of Fame, Beckwith was the starting point guard on the Spiders first-ever NCAA team in 1984, when Richmond shocked Auburn in the first round. He returned to the NCAA Tournament his senior season in 1986, and played in the NIT in 1985. More than 35 years after the conclusion of his career, Beckwith remains second in program history in both steals (227) and assists (573). Broadcast producer and Spider Sports desk studio anchor Matt Josephs, a Syracuse grad, rounds out the broadcast team, keeping listeners up-to-date with out-of-town scores and highlights. Sponsorship information for football and men's basketball broadcasts on the Spider Sports Properties Radio Network from PlayFly Sports Properties is available by contacting General Manager Mike Poplaski '13, a former Spider football player or Taylor Young, Account Executive/Sales & Service.  |
