She spent four years at the University of South Florida where she coached the men's and women's sprints, horizontal jumps and high jump, four seasons as an assistant at the University of Alabama-Birmingham and one year as a volunteer at her alma mater.
At the University of South Florida, Otey coached 12 NCAA Outdoor Championships first-round qualifiers, 30 All-Conference performers, and five conference champions including the most decorated student-athlete in school history, Matthew O'Neal. O'Neal earned All-America honors four times (twice indoors and twice outdoors), and set school records in both the indoor and outdoor triple jump. He finished fifth at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and competed internationally at the 2015 World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea where he finished eighth.
Prior to USF, Otey spent four seasons as an assistant coach at University of Alabama-Birmingham where she worked with the horizontal and vertical jumpers and multi-event athletes.
The New Kent, Va., native became a professional athlete in 2003 and participated in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic trials. Following a successful athletic career at Virginia from 1999-2003, Otey served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Cavaliers during the 2003-04 season.
While at the University of Virginia, Otey was a three time All-American, six-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer and a two-time ACC champion in the long jump. She holds the current ACC outdoor long jump record (6.54 meters/21-5.50). She ranks second in school history in the 60M and both the indoor and outdoor long jump, 3rd in the 100-meter and 4th in the 200-meter.
In 2003, Otey became the USA Indoor Track and Field champion in the long jump with a leap of 6.33 meters (20-9.25).
Otey graduated from Virginia in 2003 with a degree in sociology. A New Kent High School alum, she still holds six school records, two VHSL Class A state records (100M-11.93 / Long Jump-19-6.25) and won 1999 state championship titles in the long jump and the 100M dash.
