Bobby Maffei enters his first season as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond for head coach Russ Huesman. Maffei will be the special teams coordinator and a defensive assistant coach.

Maffei joins the Spiders most recently from Baylor, spending the past two years in Waco as a special teams and defensive quality control coach. He worked with the Bears’ special teams, helping punter Drew Galitz earn First Team All-Big 12 honors. The Bears ranked first in NCAA FBS in blocked kicks last year with seven and 26th in the nation in net punting at 39.52 yards per kick. He also worked closely with the safety position at Baylor, helping Chris Miller and Verkedric Vaughns earn Honorable Mention All-Big 12 accolades

Prior to Baylor, Maffei spent the 2016 season at Tennessee Tech as the cornerbacks coach. Under his guidance, Maleek Hall finished the season with 30 tackles, 10 pass breakups, two interceptions and one sack. His cornerback group ended the year with 30 total pass breakups.

Maffei spent two seasons on Matt Rhule’s staff at Tempe as a defensive graduate assistant working with the safeties. He assisted with the development of First Team All-American Athletic Conference selection Alex Wells. Maffei moved to Temple from Pace University where he was a wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator in 2014.

Prior to his appointment at Pace, Maffei spent three seasons at Central Connecticut State in a variety of roles. He began as director of football operations where he organized team travel, directed summer camps, and organized recruiting visits. In 2011, along with his operations role he handled quality control for the defense.

In 2012, he became the wide receivers coach and in 2013 added the responsibility of special teams coordinator. Under Maffei's tutelage, Deven Baker earned a training camp spot with the Oakland Raiders in 2012. In 2013, Tyrell Holmes was named to the All-Northeast Conference team at receiver and Rob Hollomon led the NEC in kick-off returns at 29.6 ypr -- a total that ranked 10th nationally.

The Trumbull, Conn., native, began his coaching career as a student assistant at Nebraska. He graduated from Nebraska in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in educational and human sciences. He completed a master's degree in educational leadership at Temple in 2016.
