2023 marked Jacob Huesman's first season on Russ Huesman's staff as quarterbacks coach, bringing a wealth of playing and coaching knowledge to the Spiders.
Huesman's first season on staff saw four quarterbacks make their first-ever career starts in Kyle Wickersham, Camden Coleman, Jackson Hardy and Ashten Snelsire. Huesman led Wickersham to first in the nation in completion percentage and was 23rd in the nation in pass efficiency while the Spiders as a whole were ninth nationally in completion percentage, 24th in pass efficiency, 11th in passing touchdowns, 23rd in first downs and ninth in fourth down conversion. Under Huesman, Wickersham threw 188 passes for 100 completions totaling 1,396 yards and ran for 401 yards and four rushing touchdowns. In his very first start, true freshman Camden Coleman led the Spiders to a 42-31 victory over Maine with six touchdown passes, tying for the most in a single game in program history and the most in CAA in 2023.
Prior to Richmond, Huesman served as the tight ends coach on the staff of his alma mater, Chattanooga, since 2019 and led KeShawn Toney to Freshman All-America honors in 2021. During his first year on staff at Chattanooga he helped transition Chris James from quarterback to tight end, leading to an All-Southern Conference First Team selection and preseason 2020 All-America accolades. James’ seven receiving touchdowns in 2019 led the Mocs and set a school record for tight ends.
With his dad as head coach, Huesman played for the Mocs from 2011-2015 where he was a three-time SoCon Offensive Player of the Year and holds nearly every offensive program record. An All-America selection in 2015, he led the Mocs to the FCS Playoffs Second Round in 2015 and the Quarterfinals a year earlier. He became just the fourth FCS student-athlete to post 40 rushing (43) and passing (64) touchdowns in a career and only the second to rush (4,051) and pass (8,197) for 4,000+ yards in a career.
Huesman got his coaching career started at Richmond where he was an offensive assistant in 2017 before taking a graduate assistant position at Georgia State in 2018.
