Courtney Hughes re-joined Richmond in 2007 and has worked with every varsity sport in some capacity during her time at the university.
Hughes was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Support and Civic Engagement in the fall of 2020. In this role, she became a member of the department’s Operations & Management Group and deeply involved in Athletics' Inclusion & Belonging efforts. She coordinates student-athlete initiatives regarding civic engagement and social justice, most recently partnering with the Office of International Engagement to lead student-athlete experiences abroad in both South Africa, Cuba, Chile, and Costa Rica. Additionally, Hughes assists with efforts to advance student-athlete representation, participation, and contributions to Inclusion & Belonging across the department, University, and NCAA levels.
Hughes currently oversees the academic support programs for men's and women’s basketball, baseball, cross country, women's track and field, field hockey, and women's lacrosse, in which she serves as the primary advisor and academic support facilitator. She also coordinates study halls, skill sessions, and tutoring services for Spider athletes. Hughes serves as the Disability Liaison for the Athletics department, where she works closely with student-athletes with diagnosed learning disabilities to develop and implement appropriate academic intervention strategies.
Hughes, a former track and field student athlete, completed her undergraduate degree at Richmond in 2006 and earned a Master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2007. In 2022, she earned her Doctorate degree from Eastern Tennessee State University.
Hughes is a native of Amherst, Va., and currently resides in Midlothian with her husband, Johnathan and daughter, Caydence.
