Adrian Clewlow returned to his alma mater as a volunteer assistant women's soccer coach and goalkeeper trainer ahead of the 2020-21 spring season, and he is entering his third season with the Spiders ahead of fall 2022.
Â
In the fall of 2021, Clewlow helped the Spiders to their first Atlantic 10 Tournament appearance in seven years. Richmond finished the season with the program's most conference wins since 2011, and all five of those wins came by way of a shutout, which is also the most conference shutouts since 2011.
Clewlow came to the Spiders after five seasons as Goalkeeping Coach at the Richmond Kickers and holds a FA Youth Coaching Certification, NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma, NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, and NSCAA Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma. Clewlow returns to Richmond for the second time as a coach having served as an assistant coach in 2014 and 2015 seasons.
Originally from Dover, England, Clewlow was a two-time All-South Regional All-American selection in his final two seasons for the Richmond men’s soccer team, where he was a four-year starter and two-year captain for the Spiders. After earning CAA Rookie of the Year in 1995, he later led the team to the 1998 CAA Championship. He received his bachelor’s degree in Health and Sports Science at UR in 1998.
Following his collegiate career, he played three more seasons professionally, including parts of two seasons with the Richmond Kickers.
While still a professional player, he assumed the head coaching duties locally of the junior varsity soccer and field hockey programs at the Collegiate School. Clewlow returned to UR after serving as an assistant men’s soccer coach at Franklin Pierce University, focusing on the development of the goalkeepers. Also in the three seasons before returning to the Spiders, he worked with the Massachusetts Olympic Development Program as the Associate Director of Goalkeeping.
From 2006-2014, he was the Associate Dean of Students at the Winchendon School, where he served as the Assistant Athletic Director and the head varsity boy’s soccer coach and Director of Soccer Operations for both the boys and girls programs.
He received a master’s degree in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy in 2012. Clewlow has coached at the club level with the BEST FC – Massachusetts, Chesterfield United Soccer Club and Virginia CASL Soccer Club.Â
