R.D. Montgomery joined the Richmond Athletics staff in December of 2021 as the Coordinator for Student-Athlete Success, as part of the Spider Performance (SP4) program. In June of 2024, Montgomery was promoted to Associate Director of Student-Athlete Success.
Montgomery is charged with creating a comprehensive program that ensures Spider student-athletes are prepared for life post-graduation. He leads the department’s integrated and personalized efforts to support Spider student-athletes in the areas of professional development, mentoring/networking, outreach and support for student-athletes, alumni connections, and campus engagement. Additionally, he assists student-athletes with career and graduate school preparation, engages in the department’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, and coordinates programming for SP4.
Montgomery brings a unique perspective to Spider Performance as a former Division I student-athlete, coach and working in the private sector at various businesses. He spent nine years as an assistant football coach at Bucknell (2009-17), working primarily with the tight ends while also coaching running backs and fullbacks during his tenure.
Montgomery earned his Bachelor of Arts in History from Wake Forest in 2004 where he was a four-year football letter winner and earned one letter in basketball. Montgomery lives in Richmond with his wife and three children.
