RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond sophomore guard Reggie Brown (Flushing, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) delivered a game-high and career-best 27 points to lead the Spiders to a 76-52 victory over Old Dominion in both teams' Colonial Athletic Association season opener tonight at the Robins Center.
The Spiders have now won three straight contests and improve to 4-1 overall, while the Monarchs fall to 1-7 on the campaign.
Richmond junior forward Greg Stevenson (Fayetteville, N.C./Fayetteville 71st) added 13 points and snared eight rebounds. Spider junior forward Scott Ungerer (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) dished off a game and team-best six assists.
Junior guard Pierre Greene led the Monarchs with 11 points, while senior guard Michael Williams and sophomore forward Rasheed Wright had 10 points each.
Richmond scored the first two points of the contest and never trailed thereafter. The Spiders jumped out to a 14-7 advantage before going on a 13-0 tear capped off by an Eric Zwayer (Sebring, Fla./Sebring) dunk at 9:11 to give the home team a 24-7 lead. Brown, who had some acrobatic moves to the basket in the first half, scored 17 of his 27 points in the first stanza. The Spiders shot 60 percent from the field in the first half to build a 43-27 halftime advantage. In addition, Richmond committed just two turnovers in the first 20 minutes of action en route to tying their largest halftime advantage of the campaign (49-33 at Western Michigan on November 25).
The Spiders led by double digits the entire second half. Old Dominion cut the margin to as few as 12 points (60-48) with 6:24 remaining, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way as Richmond closed the game with a 16-4 spurt. Richmond has now won their last three games by an average of 17 points.
The Spiders return to action on Saturday, December 9, visiting George Washington University at 7:30 p.m.
