Richmond Wins Fifth Straight Game

RICHMOND, Va. - Seniors Kinte Smith (Va. Beach, Va./Cape Henry) and Greg Stevenson (Fayetteville, N.C./71st) each scored 19 points to pilot Richmond to a 74-67 victory over Marist Tuesday night at the Robins Center. The Spiders have now won five straight contests and improve to 6-1, their best season start since 1987-88.
The two teams traded field goals the majority of the first half. Red Foxes center Marius Janisius scored eight of the teams' first 11 field goals of the game. Smith countered the attack, scoring 11 of Richmond's first 18 points of the contest. Marist outscored Richmond 22-10 in the paint in the first half. The Spiders, who led by nine at the 6:17 mark, led by one at the break (35-34).
Richmond would never trail in the second stanza. Rick Houston's (Memphis, Tenn./Bartlett) two consecutive three-pointers less than a minute apart with 7:59 to play gave the Spiders a 10-point lead. Stevenson scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half, including two treys to open the half.
Richmond sophomore guard Reggie Brown (Flushing, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) added 11 points. For the Red Foxes, Janisius had 18 points, a career-high, while Blake Sonne finished with eleven.
Richmond is now off for exams. The Spiders travel to Appalachian State on December 21. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
