STARKVILLE, Miss. - Senior forward Greg Stevenson (Fayetteville, N.C./Fayetteville 71st) recorded a season-high 23 points and 10 rebounds and three other Spiders placed in double figures as Richmond (3-1) notched an 83-72 victory over Mississippi State (3-2) Saturday afternoon in Humphrey Coliseum.
For the Spiders, Reggie Brown (Flushing, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) chipped in a season-high 21 points shooting 5-7 from beyond the arc. Junior guard Scott Ungerer (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) posted a career-high 16 points while senior forward Kinte Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) added 14 points.
The Spiders took an early lead and never relinquished it. After missing their first two field goal attempts of the game, Richmond made seven of its next eight shots, all of which were from beyond the arc. Brown fueled the three-point attack, accounting for three treys during the nine minute run which put the Spiders ahead 23-8 with 13:28 remaining in the first half. Mississippi State would charge back with a three-point barrage of its own. A pair of three-pointers from the Bulldogs Tang Hamilton pulled the home team to within four, 40-36, at the break.
Mississippi State closed the lead to two (40-38) on a Robert Jackson layup to open the second half but Richmond responded going on a 21-4 tear. The Bulldogs would pull to within 10 points twice but key free throws down the stretch sealed the win for the Spiders.
Richmond shot 48.3 percent (28-58) from the field for the game, including a 57.7 percent showing in the second stanza. The Spiders committed a season-low seven team turnovers while handing out 20 assists.
The Spiders will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 6 to play host to Old Dominion in both teams first Colonial Athletic Association game of the season. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
