Wake Forest Defeats Richmond, 69-61

RICHMOND, Va. - No. 17-ranked Wake Forest began the season with a 3-0 record following tonight's 69-61 win over Richmond at the Robins Center on the campus of the University of Richmond. The Demon Deacons placed four players in double figures, led by junior guard Craig Dawson's 16 points. Sophomore forward Josh Howard added 14 points, while senior guard Robert O'Kelley had 13 points. Junior forward Darius Songaila finished with 12 points.
Spider senior forward Greg Stevenson (Fayetteville, N.C./71st) delivered 21 points and sophomore guard Reggie Brown (Flushing, N.Y./Archbishop Molly) registered 17 points to pace the Richmond attack.
Richmond dominated the game in the early stages, jumping out to a 15-4 advantage, capped by a Stevenson three-pointer at the 13:19 mark. However, Wake Forest closed the half with a 21-3 run to own a 34-25 edge at intermission. Songaila paced the Demon Deacons with 10 first half points.
Wake Forest ballooned its lead to as many as 11 points (44-33 and 46-35) on two occasions midway through the second half. However, Richmond cut the lead to two points, 61-59 in the late stages of the contest, capped by a Stevenson dunk at the 2:41 mark which completed an 11-5 Richmond spurt. The Demon Deacons answered with a short jumper in the lane by Dawson to make it 63-59 with 1:34 on the clock. Stevenson made it a one possession game again, hitting a jumper to get the Spiders within 63-61 with 1:17 remaining. Stevenson's basket would be the final points Richmond would score on the evening as Wake Forest closed the game with a 6-0 run.
Richmond shot 39.3 percent from the field for the game, including 33.3 (11-for-33) from three-point territory, while the Demon Deacons shot 51.8 percent from the field for the contest. Wake Forest also out-rebounded the Spiders, 38-23.
The Spiders return to action on Saturday, November 25, visiting Western Michigan at 2 p.m.
