RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Spiders got four goals from junior Heather Rice (Oklahoma City, Okla./Heritage Hall) in gaining a 6-0 win over the visiting Longwood College Lancers this afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
After a scoreless first half, Richmond would get things started in the second stanza. Rice had a shot deflected back to her and was able to slip a pass to Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) who tipped it in for the score at the 31:25 mark.
Rice gained her first of four goals on the afternoon after Richmond received three consecutive penalty corners. On the third try, Murphy controlled a loose ball in front of the cage and assisted Rice to put the Spiders up 2-0. The fourth goal for Richmond came from senior Megan Conway (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) on an unassisted shot near the top of the circle. Rice recorded her hat trick while sweeping in front of the cage after clearing a path and rifling a shot past the goalkeeper on the run.
The final goal for the Spiders also came from Rice and was assisted by freshman Brittney Parrish (Anchorage, Ky./Assumption). Parrish slipped it through the goalkeeper's legs out in front of the cage to a waiting Rice who found the ball and dumped it into an open goal.
The Spider defense led by senior goalkeeper Brooke Fuller (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) was strong all afternoon holding Longwood to only 2 shots on goal.
Richmond improves to 5-8 on the year while Longwood falls to 9-3. The Spiders travel to cross-town rival Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday. The CAA matchup is scheduled for 1 p.m.
