DURHAM, N.C. - Junior forward Heather Rice (Oklahoma City, Okla/Heritage Hall) scored her 12th goal of the season on a penalty stroke with 11:02 left in the first overtime as the Richmond Spiders upset the No. 17 ranked Duke Blue Devils 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Williams Field. Richmond improves to 4-8 while Duke drops to 5-6.
Duke managed to control most the first half as they outshot the Spiders 7-1, but neither team tallied a goal.
Duke struck first in the second half when Dukes junior forward Liz Bateman scored her third goal of the season at 22:03 on an assist from junior foward Melissa Yuppa to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead. Yuppa started the play when she took the ball to corner and fired a shot on goal which was deflected by Bateman into the back of the net.
The Spiders answered right back a minute and a half later when they capitilized on a penalty corner. Senior forward Stacey Smith (Leesburg, Va./Herndon) scored the first goal of her career on an assist from sophomore forward Kristin Gavin (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) at 20:47 to tie the score at 1-1.
The game headed into overtime where both teams traded scoring opportunities early. Richmond scored the game-winner after being awarded a penalty stroke when Duke's Sarah Wright grabbed the ball with her hand during a scramble in front of the Duke net. Rice then scored the game-winning goal as she beat Duke sophomore goalkeeper Erica Perrier.
The Spiders return back to action on Friday, October 6 when they host Longwood.
