Wake Forest Bests Richmond, 87-69

RICHMOND, Va. - Wake Forest freshman forward Afton Hill delivered a game and career-high 22 points and the Demon Deacons outscored Richmond 46-25 in the second half to post an 87-69 victory today before a crowd of 5,579 at the Robins Center.
With the win, Wake Forest improves to 3-1 overall, while the Spiders fall to 2-3 on the campaign. Senior guard Candice Edwards (Newport News, Va./Menchville) paced Richmond with 12 points. Junior forward Tasha Swaby (Satellite Beach, Fla./Satellite) snared eight rebounds. Senior forward Carolyn Constantakis (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) had seven rebounds for the Spiders.
Hill was joined in double figures by freshman guard Tonia Brown with 16 points and junior guard Val Klopfer notched 10 points.
The Spiders owned a 44-41 halftime advantage behind Swaby's seven points at intermission. Richmond owned a 50-49 edge with 15:44 remaining. From that point, the Demon Deacons staged a 29-2 run and led 73-52 with 9:53 to go. Brown registered 10 points in that span and Hill supplied seven points in the decisive stretch. The Spiders could get no closer than 16 points the remainder of the game.
Wake Forest's defense tightened in the second half as the Spiders shot just 34.3 percent from the field in the second half and 34.7 percent for the game.
Richmond returns to action on Saturday, December 2, hosting Virginia Tech at 4 p.m. at the Wachovia Challenge at the Robins Center.
