RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's tennis squad registered a 14-13 record last spring and placed fifth at the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championships. Facing 11 nationally-ranked teams last year, the Spiders recorded victories over perennial powers East Tennessee State, UNC Greensboro, Hampton, Davidson and American, establishing the program as one of the most competitive in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Senior and first-team All-CAA honoree Alex Howard bolstered the Spiders last season. In addition, junior Aljosa Piric, playing at No. 2 singles, enjoyed a solid spring and will lead Richmond into the fall campaign.
At the No. 3 spot, freshman Travis Wagner, a tranfer from Texas Tech, was instrumental in the team's successes. Senior Matt Davis notched several clutch victories rotating between No. 4 singles and No. 1 doubles. Senior co-captain Brock Parker bolstered the team in doubles action, while his brother, Todd, had a strong freshman year playing at No. 6 singles. Sophomores Rob Flader and Mark Scordo also provided the team with exceptional depth. Fladder registered a hard-fought singles victory at the No. 5 spot to clinch a victory over American in CAA Tournament action.
Expectations are high for the 1999-2000 season. Four freshmen will complement six upperclassmen, giving the Spiders one of its deepest teams in years.
