NCAA Run Caps Historic Season for Men's Tennis at No. 13 South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team saw its season end Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling to No. 13 South Carolina at the Carolina Tennis Center. The appearance marked Richmond's first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2006.
The Spiders finish the 2026 campaign at 17-9 overall after capturing the Atlantic 10 Championship as the No. 5 seed and earning the league's automatic bid.
How It Happened
South Carolina claimed the early momentum in doubles play, securing wins on courts two and three to take a 1-0 lead before the top court match could be completed. Davis Wiley and Cole Brashear narrowly trailed No. 6 Lucas da Silva and Paul Barbier (SC), 4-3 on court No. 1 before play was halted.
In singles, the Gamecocks extended their advantage with straight-set wins on courts four and one. Atakan Karahan defeated Dylan Atkinson 6-1, 6-2 on court four, followed by a 6-1, 6-1 win from No. 14 Lucas da Silva over Davis Wiley on court one.
South Carolina clinched the match on court two, where No. 73 Sean Daryabeigi earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Charlie Burdell to seal the 4-0 decision.
Three additional singles matches went unfinished, including a first-set tiebreak battle on court three and a strong opening set from Otto Sewell on court five. Cole Brashear also remained in contention on court six when play was halted.

Season Recap
Richmond's 2026 season was highlighted by a historic run through the Atlantic 10 Championship, where the Spiders became the first No. 5 seed since 2012 to capture the title. Richmond knocked off top-seeded VCU in the semifinal round, earning its first win over the Rams since 1990, before rallying past Dayton in the championship match behind a clinching performance from Cole Brashear. The A-10 crown was the program's first title since 2006.
