Spiders Squeek Past Rams in Overtime

KINGSTON, R.I. - Sophomore kicker Doug Kirchner nailed a 25-yard field goal in overtime and the Spiders defense stopped the Rams on a fourth-and-one in the extra period as Richmond edged Rhode Island 13-10.
Following a scoreless first period, the Spiders drove 75 yards in 14 plays and moved to the Rhode Island seven, where Kirchner hit a 24-yard field goal to put Richmond on top 3-0. The Rams took the ensuing kickoff and drove 60 yards in eight plays. Rhode Island moved to the Richmond 14, where Shane Laisle booted a 31-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3. The Rams moved to the Richmond 19 on their next possession, but two straight sacks moved them out of field goal range and the half ended in a 3-3 tie.
The Spiders had their most impressive drive on their first possession of the second half. Richmond drove 80 yards in 11 plays, all on the ground, with senior tailback TyRonne Turner scoring from five yards out to put the Spiders ahead 10-3. Richmond progressed to the Rhode Island 25 on its next possession, but junior quarterback Sean Gustus was stopped for no gain on fourth-and-two. The Spiders moved the ball effectively in the fourth quarter, starting on their own 16 and moving to the Rhode Island 42. But Turner was stopped for no gain on fourth-and-one, halting a drive that consumed 6:15. The Rams then drove down the field and David Jamison scored from 15 yards out to tie the game at 10-10 with 3:15 left.
Neither team scored on its final possession, sending the game into overtime. Rhode Island won the toss and elected to play defense first. Richmond used six running plays to move the ball to the nine, where Kirchner hit a 25-yard field goal to put the Spiders on top 13-10. The Rams advanced to the 16, but on fourth-and-one, QB Vince Nedimyer was stopped short of the 15 by junior safety Chad Blackstock and the Spiders held on for the 13-10 win.
