Richmond Rushes Past Wildcats, 28-18

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Richmond set a school record with 430 rushing yards as the Spiders registered a 28-18 victory at Villanova on a blustery autumn afternoon.
Junior quarterback D'Arcy Wills picked up 151 yards on the ground and junior fullback Scott Fulton had 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns in leading the Richmond running attack. Villanova's Brian Westbrook took the opening kickoff to the Richmond 32. The Wildcats picked up a first down and moved to the 13 before settling for a 30-yard field goal by Casey Hannon. Richmond answered later in the period with a one-yard touchdown run by senior tailback TyRonne Turner to give the Spiders a 7-3 lead.
Westbrook scored on a two-yard run for the Wildcats as Villanova took a 10-7 advantage early in the second quarter. Turner returned the ensuing kickoff 34 yards to the Richmond 43 and was tackled by Hannon, who left the game with a leg injury. Fulton capped the drive with a three-yard TD run to put the Spiders back on top 14-10. Villanova drove immediately to the Richmond two. A pair of sacks by senior linebacker Mac Janney pushed the Wildcats back to the 17, where backup kicker Chris Birch missed a 34-yard field goal.
The score remained 14-10 at halftime. The Spiders moved 68 yards in seven plays on their first posession of the second half. Fulton scored on a four-yard run to put Richmond ahead 21-10. After the teams exchanged punts, Janney intercepted a pass and gave the Spiders the ball on the Richmond 44. Four plays later, junior tailback J.R. Purnell scored on a 12-yard run to give the Spiders a 28-10 cushion. Villanova scored late in the third quarter on an eight-yard run by Duc Augustin, the final points of the afternoon as the Spiders claimed the 28-18 victory.
