GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina placed seven players in double figures, led by sophomore guard Tali Robich's game-high 19 points to post a 90-78 victory over Richmond in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action today at Minges Coliseum.
Senior forward Tamilla Murray added 16 points and seven rebounds, while senior forward Nikki Brown had 11 points. Senior guard Christal Avery, senior guard Roc Canady, senior guard Joana Fogaca and freshman forward Courtney Willis posted 10 points each.
Junior guard Michele Koclanes (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) delivered a 13-point, 10-assist double-double to pace Richmond (9-7, 3-2 CAA), while senior forward Carolyn Constantakis (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) and junior forward Tasha Swaby (Satellite Beach, Fla./Satellite) notched 12 points each.
East Carolina (8-6, 3-0 CAA) built a six-point halftime advantage at 42-36 behind Brown's 11 points and opened its lead to 62-50 with 12:30 remaining in the contest. Richmond quickly climbed back into the game, paring the lead to 65-63 with 9:00 on the clock following a Constantakis three-pointer. However, that would be as close as Richmond would get the rest of the way as East Carolina responded with a 18-4 spurt and led 83-67. The surge was capped by a Candy jumper in the lane.
East Carolina shot 55.5 percent for the game, including 64.0 percent in the closing half. In addition, they forced 27 Spider turnovers, including 15 in the second half to win their third consecutive conference game.
Despite trailing by as many as seven points in the opening stages of the first half, Richmond took the lead at 23-20 after Constantakis connected on a turnaround in the lane. The Spiders owned a 30-28 lead with 4:12 left until halftime, but East Carolina closed by scoring 14 of the half's final 20 points to enjoy a lead they would never relinquish.
East Carolina has now won their past 37 contests when scoring 90 or more points.
Richmond returns to action on Thursday, January 18, visiting Virginia at 7 p.m.
