Spiders Drop Overtime Rock Fight at George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought overtime battle at George Washington, 57-54, Wednesday night. With the loss, Richmond fell to 22-6 overall and 12-3 in Atlantic 10 Conference play while the Revolutionaries improved to 14-14 overall and 6-9 in league action.

How It Happened
Rachel Ullstrom opened the scoring with a three-pointer before George Washington answered with a layup. After the teams traded baskets, the Revolutionaries took a 6-5 lead on another layup. The back-and-forth continued until a 7-0 GW run closed the quarter, sending Richmond into the second trailing 15-9.
Aneisha Scott opened the second quarter with a jumper at the 7:12 mark. Alicia Newell and Ava Persichetti combined for five points to give Richmond a 16-15 advantage, but George Washington tied the game at 16 from the free throw line. Ally Sweeney added a layup to briefly restore the lead before the Revolutionaries used a 6-0 surge to take a 22-18 edge into halftime.
George Washington extended its lead with two layups to open the third quarter before Rayne Wright answered at the rim. Scott followed with a jumper to trim the deficit to four, 26-22, but the Revolutionaries responded with a 7-0 run to push the margin to 33-22. Wright completed an and-one opportunity late in the frame and Maggie Doogan added a layup, yet GW carried a 36-27 advantage into the fourth.
Newell sparked Richmond's rally with an and-one play to begin the final period. After George Washington pushed the lead to eight, Sweeney connected on a jumper to ignite a 12-0 Spider run. Richmond reclaimed the lead, 42-38, midway through the quarter. The Revolutionaries answered with a jumper before Doogan knocked down a three-pointer and Sweeney converted two free throws to move back in front, 47-40. GW chipped away with a 6-0 run to pull within one, 47-46, but Doogan converted inside to extend the UR lead to three. The Revolutionaries then answered with an and-one to tie the game at 49. Sweeney's final attempt in regulation did not fall, sending the contest to overtime tied at 49.
