WASHINGTON (AP)- Rick Houston made two free throws with no time left on the clock to give Richmond its eighth straight win over American, a dramatic 60-59 victory Wednesday night.
Richmond (12-5, 4-3 Colonial Athletic Association) was forced to go the length of the floor in three seconds after Patrick Doctor's offensive put-back appeared to have scored the game-winner for American (6-13, 2-6) when he grabbed a missed 3-pointer by Ronald Hearns and made a lay-up.
In the final three seconds, Greg Stevenson, who led Richmond with 16, caught the ball on the far side of half-court. He dribbled to the foul line and passed to Houston, who dribbled and leaped toward the basket when he was fouled by Hearns.
Despite protest from the American bench about how much time had elapsed, Houston converted the final two of his 13 from the line to give the Spiders the win. Four of the last five games between the two schools have been decided by three points or less.
Doctor led American in scoring with 19 points and eight rebounds.
The Spiders, who led 32-30 at halftime, trailed 57-55 with 59 seconds to play when Stevenson stole the inbound pass and made a jumper to tie the game. After an American miss, Stevenson made another free throw with 30 seconds to play, setting the stage for Doctor's put-back that gave the Eagles their brief lead.
Keith Gray had 12 points off the bench for American and Tim Faulconer added 10 points for the Spiders.
