RICHMOND, Va. - William & Mary freshman forward Ornit Schwartz posted a 26-point, 10-rebound double-double and the Tribe shot 57.1 percent from the field in the second half to post a 78-69 victory over Richmond in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action tonight at the Robins Center.
Altogether, William & Mary (6-11, 2-4 CAA) placed three players in double figures with sophomore guard Jen Sobota notching 16 points, seven assists and four rebounds, while junior forward Quintina Walker had 15 points and six boards.
All of the Spiders five starters reached double figures, paced by sophomore center Ebony Tanner's (Garner, N.C./Ravenscroft) 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. She also corralled a team-high nine rebounds. Senior forward Candice Edwards (Newport News, Va./Menchville) and sophomore guard Elise Ryder (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne) each had 11 points, while senior forward Carolyn Constantakis (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) and junior guard Michele Koclanes (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) added 10 points. Despite solid production from the starting five, the Spiders bench - which came in to the contest producing nearly 42 percent of the team's points - pitched in just nine points versus the Tribe.
Richmond (10-9, 4-3 CAA) owned a 41-33 advantage at intermission, capped by a Koclanes jumper in the lane as time expired in the opening half. Richmond owned the rebounding edge, 19-11 and the tandem of Tanner (11 points) and Constantakis (10 points) led a Spiders attack that shot 51.5 percent from the field in the first half. Schwartz kept the Tribe within striking distance with 13 points.
The Spiders owned a 48-38 edge with 16:53 remaining in the game, but the Tribe responded with a 20-5 scoring spurt and led 58-53 at the 8:11 mark after sophomore guard Helen Mortlock connected on a three-pointer. Richmond responded and tied the game at 59-all with 7:01 remaining, but William & Mary, seemingly ready with an answer for every Spider basket, went on a decisive 13-7 run and enjoyed a 72-66 advantage with 2:37 to go. Sobota contributed six points in the stretch and Richmond was not able to slice into the lead thereafter.
The Tribe outscored Richmond, 45-28 in the second half and Ornitz struck for 13 points. William & Mary also controlled the boards, out-rebounding Richmond 25-18.
"Give William & Mary a lot of credit," commented Richmond head coach Bob Foley. "They dictated the tempo in the second half and I truly believe they wanted the game more than we did in the final 20 minutes. We just left Schwartz open too many times and she did a good job capitalizing on our mistakes defensively."
Richmond resumes conference action by visiting American on Monday, January 29 at 7 p.m.
