Spiders Overpower Coppin State, 78-64

Joining Edwards in double figures for Richmond (4-4) were sophomore center Ebony Tanner (Garner, N.C./Ravenscroft), who delivered 12 points and snared a game and career-high 15 rebounds. Junior guard Michele Koclanes (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) recorded 11 points and sophomore forward Cammy Desmond (Midlothian, Va./James River) had 10 points. Senior forward Lizz Greene (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) registered a career-best 10 rebounds.
Coppin State (2-7) was paced by senior guard Kiesha Brooks' game and season-high 27 points. She also pulled down 11 rebounds to notch her fifth double-double of the season. Eagle junior forward Jackie Johnson-Stewart produced a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double as well.
Holding a 15-13 first half edge, the Spiders staged a 20-8 run to extend their lead to 14 points and lead 35-21 with 4:33 remaining in the opening half. Richmond owned a 42-29 advantage at intermission, forcing 13 Eagle turnovers. The Spiders held Coppin State to just seven points in the opening 8:30 of the second half and pushed their lead to a game-high 18 points (58-40) at the 11:30 mark. With the exception of two occasions when Coppin State cut Richmond's advantage to nine points with under 3:00 to go, the Spiders led by double digits the remainder of the contest.
The Spiders forced 23 Coppin State turnovers for the game, marking the third straight contest that Richmond has caused more than 22 giveaways. In addition, the Spiders were 22-of-35 from the free throw line, including 26 attempts from the charity stripe in the second half.
Richmond concludes its season-long five-game home stand on Friday, December 22, hosting West Virginia at the Robins Center at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast by WRNL AM Radio 910.
