Richmond Women's Swimming and Diving Sweeps Tri-Meet Action At Georgia Southern

The University of Richmond women's swimming and diving team posted victories over the College of Charleston (82-58), Howard (95-27) and meet host Georgia Southern (89-51) in tri-meet action this weekend at Hanner Natatorium.
Richmond was powered by junior Kristin Newkirk's (Marietta, Ga./Alan C. Pope) pool-record time of 54.78 in the 100 butterfly. Newkirk also claimed the 50 freestyle in 25.15, while sophomore Megan O'Hara (Maple Glen, Pa./Hatboro Horsham) finished second in the event (25.43) as well as placing third in the 100 freestyle (55.18).
Also claiming first place finishes for the Spiders were sophomore Elizabeth Cook (Richmond, Va./The Collegiate School), who won the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.71, fellow second-year standout Leigh Figh (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Academy) captured the 500 freestyle in 5:19.44 and newcomer Julie Waizenhofer (Mason, Ohio/Mason) a first place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:59.04). First-year standout Lauren Telander (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:20.73. Cook and Figh were each fourth in the 100 breastroke (1:11.84) and 200 butterfly (2:16.06), respectively.
Richmond remains on the road and will visit James Madison on Saturday, January 27.
