James Madison place five players in double figures led by junior forward Katie Hardbarger's 16 points to post an 89-86 victory over Richmond in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action tonight at the Robins Center.
With the win, James Madison improves to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the CAA, while Richmond sees its season-long four-game win streak conclude, slip to 9-6 on the campaign and 3-1 in league action.
Joining Hardbarger in double figures were junior guard Kunika McCoy (15 points), sophomore forward Shanna Price (13 points), junior guard Allyson Keener (11 points) and sophomore forward Nadine Morgan (10 points). The Spiders were paced by sophomore guard Elise Ryder's (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne) career-high 20 points, while junior forward Tasha Swaby (Satellite Beach, Fla./Satellite) added 15 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Candice Edwards (Newport News, Va./Menchville) posted 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while junior point guard Michele Koclanes (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) added 12 points and nine assists. Sophomore center Krystn Gull (Asheville, N.C./Erwin) had 10 points.
Despite trailing by as many as 13 points (70-57) in the second half, Richmond responded with a furious rally and a 18-5 run and caught James Madison at 75-all with 6:35 remaining. Thereafter, the Spiders built its lead to as many as five points at 86-81 with 3:03 to go following an Edwards jumper. Leading 86-85 with 2:09 on the clock, Morgan connected on a desperation three-pointer as the shot clock expired to put the Dukes ahead 88-86. Morgan split one of two free throws with :14 left and Richmond's last-second three-point attempt spun out.
James Madison shot 51.6 percent from the field for the contest, including 60 percent in the second half. However, Richmond forced the Dukes into 26 turnovers, including 18 in the second half to erase the deficit.
Ryder kept the Spiders close in the opening half, accounting for 20 points, including six three pointers. However, James Madison owned a 53-51 advantage at halftime with McCoy contributing 13 points. In addition, the Dukes won the rebounding battle, 31-18 in the opening half.
