FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Forwards George Evans and Jessie Young combined for 28 points and 15 rebounds Wednesday night to lead George Mason to a 67-57 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Richmond.
Evans, vying to become the first three-time CAA Player of the Year since Navy's David Robinson in 1985-87, finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Young, a sophomore from Peterborough, Ontario, made 14 points and grabbed six rebounds as George Mason (8-4, 3-0 CAA) snapped a two-game losing streak.
Greg Stevenson led Richmond (8-3, 1-1) with game-highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Rick Houston added 13 points for the Spiders, who made their final trip to Fairfax as members of the CAA.
Stevenson scored seven points during Richmond's 13-3 run to a 48-46 deficit with 6:45 remaining. GMU answered with a 10-0 run, capped by consecutive layups by freshman Raoul Heinen.
Young's midcourt steal and assist to Evans for a two-handed slam and 54-46 lead with 4:27 left highlighted the flurry. Young's layup on the run gave the Patriots an insurmountable 60-48 lead with 1:28 left.
Young scored five of GMU's first seven points as the Spiders double-teamed Evans, who gave the Patriots a 9-4 lead on his first shot 6 minutes into the game.
Raoul Heinen hit a 3-pointer to give George Mason a 33-20 halftime lead.
