Cross Country Competes at Pre-National Meet

GREENVILLE, SC- The University of Richmond women's and men's cross country teams competed in one of the most prestigious meets in the nation this past weekend. The Furman University Invitational brought together most of the top-30 nationally ranked teams for a preview of the NCAA Championships course. Furman hosts the NCAA Championships later next month on their golf course.
The Richmond women competed in the Silver Race, which was one of the two seeded championship races (Silver and Purple). Their goal was to finish in the top 25 teams and they finished a respectable 27th out of 37 teams. Sarah Dill once again led the charge for the Spiders placing 109th with a personal best of 22:57 for the 6K race. Katie Sloan and Sarah Taylor were next for Richmond running 23:19 and 23:21 respectively.
"This was not one of our best efforts," Coach Lori Taylor said. "Our girls looked a little flat and were not aggressive enough late in the race. We were competing against the best programs in the nation and when you don't have a great effort it will show against these teams."
The men competed in the Men's Invitational Race and finished 24th out of 30 teams. Sophomore Jon Lauder was the top finisher for the team with his performance of 27:35 for the 8K course. Matt Hannay and Tim Caramore were next for the Spiders finishing in 28:08 and 28:23.
According to Coach Steve Taylor, "We were off our mark today. Jon (Lauder) ran solid and continued to move well throughout. As a team we just didn't get into position and once that happened we moved back through the pack instead of up through the pack. We want to expose our athletes to this level of competition as motivation for the future of the program and I believe many of our athletes came away from here motivated."
