UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- The University of Massachusetts scored with 11:39 remaining in the first overtime period to post the 2-1 victory over Richmond in Atlantic 10 field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. The contest was Richmond's fourth overtime game in the past five outings.
The Minutewomen opened the scoring at the 29:24 mark of the first stanza when senior forward Lindsay Abbott found the right corner of the box off a pass from Sarah Bohonowicz to give the visitors a 1-0 edge.
Richmond dominated on offense in the second half, registering five of its six corners of the game. After failing to score on their first three corners of the second half, the Spiders converted the fourth try. Senior Holly Chase (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) delivered to junior Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) who shuffled a short pass to senior Heather Rice (Oklahoma City, Okla./Heritage Hall). Rice fired a bullet into the right corner, her 13th goal of the season, to even the score, 1-1.
Massachusetts earned the victory when a streaking Kaitlyn Byron fired from the left side at Richmond keeper Jen Alpert. While Alpert blocked the first attempt, Byron's putback was the difference in the game.
