Women's Soccer Defeats La Salle, 3-2 In Triple Overtime

KINGSTON, R.I. --- The University of Richmond women's soccer team (10-8-1) posted a 3-2 triple-overtime win against victory over La Salle in the semi-finals of the 2001 Verizon Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship at the URI Soccer Complex on Friday evening. Richmond advances to the A-10 finals where they will face Dayton on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
La Salle jumped out to the early lead 10 minutes in to the contest but Richmond responded knotting the score in the 38th minute when sophomore Molly Rettig (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) connected on a pass from senior Meredith Johnson (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton).
The Spiders took the lead early in the second half when Rettig notched her second goal of the game, off of the post, with an assist from fellow classmate Bethany Shewmaker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) at 47:19. The Explorers battled back throughout the second half and capitalized at the 76:57 mark when Amy Schneider found Jessica Eisle on a breakaway for the game-tying goal.
The two teams battled through two scoreless overtimes before senior Laura Gincel (Princeton, N.J./West Windsor) netted the game-winner in an open goal to give Richmond the victory in the 130th minute.
