PHILADELPHIA - The University of Richmond women's swimming and diving team fell just short on Saturday as the Spiders were defeated by Pennsylvania, 152.5-147.5. Richmond won six individual events and the team was lead by freshman Mary Adams (Williamsburg, Va.) who won three.
Adams was victorious in the 100 breast (1:07.99), 200 breast (2:25.03) and 200 individual medley (2:07.60). The freshman's times in all three events were fast enough to put her in the school's top 10 for each event. Adams has swam the 200 breast four times and holds Richmond's top four all-time times in the event.
Also posting wins for Richmond were Erin Lears (Towson, Md.) who swam the 1000 free in 10:24.10, her fastest time this year and the second fastest ever at Richmond. Divers Heather Barber (Downington, Pa.) and Katie Shipe (Mendon, N.Y.) won the one meter and three meter events, respectively. The Spiders also took first place in the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay.
Richmond's record drops to 7-2 on the season. The Spiders have some time off before their last meet of 2001, the University of Virginia Invitational from November 28 through December 1.
