UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman swimmer Mary Adams (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) was named the Atlantic 10 Performer and Rookie of the Week for the week ending November 11. Adams has been nothing short of sensational this season as she has scattered her name all over the Richmond record books while helping lead the team to a 7-2 start.
This past week, the freshman competed in six individual events, winning five of them and finishing second in the other as the Spiders defeated William & Mary (153-147) and Georgia Southern (219-78) on the 8th and then fell to Pennsylvania, 152.5-147.5, on the 10th. Despite finishing second in the 200 breaststroke, her time of 2:21.96 set a Richmond record, something the freshman has done frequently in her short stint with the Spiders. Adams has swam the 200 breaststroke only four times, yet has the top four times in Richmond history.
Of the 18 individual events Adams has participated in this season, she has finished first an astonishing 14 times, while placing second in the other four. In addition to her dominance in the 200 breaststroke, she also has four of Richmond's top 10 all-time times in the 100 breaststroke, two of the top 10 times in the 1000 free, and the school record in the 200 IM (and three of the top five times). She is also in the top 10 in the 200 free, 500 free, 200 back, and 200 fly.
In addition to the Richmond records, this season Adams holds the top times in the Atlantic 10 in an amazing seven categories (having swam in only eight): the 100 and 200 breaststroke, 200 free, 200 back, 200 fly, 200 IM, and 500 free. She has also been involved in seven relays, helping her team to win six of them.
Adams and the Spiders return to the pool on November 28 as the team will participate in the University of Virginia Invitational which runs through December 1.
